There never seems to be enough hours in the day to get everything done. This is especially true for caregivers. We can all relate with how busy the holiday season can be. With a few modifications, the holiday’s can be a stress-free time to enjoy time with family and friends. And that’s really what the spirit of the season is about!
Recognize the signs of caregiver burnout
- Feeling pessimistic and dissatisfied
- Decreased energy or emotional exhaustion
- Withdrawing from friends or social interactions
- Loss of interest in work or enjoyable activities
- Increased use of alcohol or medication to relax
- Becoming impatient, irritable, or argumentative
- Lowered resistance to illness
Take care of yourself first
Take some time each day to do the things you enjoy. Read a book or go for a walk to reduce your stress levels. Aim to eat a healthy diet and limit caffeine and alcohol. Make your rest a priority. Sleep deprivation can leave you in a terrible mood and zap your energy, leaving your body and mind stressed.
Prioritize and Simplify
Decide which holiday traditions are important to you and your family. Hosting a large dinner at your home? Consider a potluck, and make a list of types of foods for people to bring so the dinner is balanced. Recruit friends and family to help decorate and clean. Most people understand how hectic it is getting ready for the holidays, and are more than willing to help.
Shopping for gifts can be stressful. Malls and shops tend to be so busy this time of year. Look to simplify your list. Consider drawing names and buying a slightly more substantial gift for that person, instead of buying gifts for every member of the family. It adds an element of fun, and reduces the amount of shopping time.
If holiday crowds are challenging for you, shop online! Most large retailers offer free shipping or a gift wrapping service. It can’t get much easier than gifts being delivered right to your door.
